Continuing a Trumpetville tradition…
For the months January through March, I read a total of twenty four books, most of which were published prior to 2016.
So, in the order I preferred them when I compiled the list ten minutes ago (and, of course, it may be subject to change), here’s my top thirteen books for 2016 so far:-
The Pleasure Merchant – Molly Tanzer (Lazy Fascist Press)
The Night Clock – Paul Meloy (Solaris)
A Song of Shadows – John Connolly (Hodder & Stoughton)
Midian Unmade: Tales of Clive Barker’s Nightbreed – Edited by Joseph Nassise & Del Howison (Tor)
Paper Tigers – Damien Angelica Walters (Dark House Press)
Rapture of the Deep – Cody Goodfellow (Hippocampus Press)
Vermilion – Molly Tanzer (Word Horde Press)
The Witch of the Wood – Michael Aronovitz (Hippocampus Press)
The Female Factory – Lisa L. Hannett & Angela Slatter (Twelfth Planet Press)
Year’s Best Weird Fiction Volume 2 – Edited by Kathe Koja & Michael Kelly (Undertow Publications)
My Name is Mary Sutherland – Kate Farrell (P S Publications)
Terror Tales of the Ocean – Edited by Paul Finch (Gray Friar Press)
Meet Me in the Middle of the Air – Eric Schaller (Undertow Publications)
It breaks down as seven novels, three collections, and three anthologies. Publishers Hippocampus Press and Undertow Publications appear twice on the list, while writer Molly Tanzer is the only individual to appear twice.
By my count, ten of these books weren’t first published in 2016, including those in the top four spots, so it is a ‘best of Pete’s reading in 2016’ rather than ‘Pete’s best of the year’ (a not too subtle distinction) and, of course, I only read a fraction of what gets published.
