Books Read in 1997

This post follows on from Books Read in 1996, which I posted back in January.

And for this year the total number of books read has gone down from 1996’s 120 to 101 – it was a year in which a lot of real life concerns were cutting into my reading time.

Casting a jaundiced eye down the list, I don’t recognise any significant new discoveries, and catching up on detective series – the work of Jonathan Kellerman, Anne Perry, and Lindsey Davis – appears to have been a thing.

On this day in 1997 I was reaching the end of Perry’s tale of Victorian detection, A Sudden Fearful Death, while on the occasion of my forty third birthday I was struggling through the disappointing Bite. I’m a fan mostly of Richard Laymon’s work, but this vampire novel truly sucked. It did however give me what remains, even after all this time, my favourite putdown in a review – ‘this book is filled with unspeakable things – sometimes the characters talk about nothing else’.

As usual, most of the author details have been completed from memory, so if you see something that looks incorrect please shout.

The name of the author of Rose cannot be called to mind, alas. The book weighs in at a substantial 488 pages (and it’s not Rose Madder listed incorrectly, before you ask), which makes my failure to remember especially galling. I’ll look it up at some point, but in the meantime if anyone has an idea please feel free to shout out.
