Books Read in 1989

Following on from last October’s Books Read in 1988. Yes, it’s been a while.

The total for the year is down to 109 titles, though that figure is slightly deceptive in that several of the books I read (by Barker, Brown, White and Wodehouse) were omnibus volumes. Still lots of history and poetry in the mix, though not quite as much art as in the previous year, and I appear to have continued with the practice of ‘dedicated’ reading periods, with all of May devoted to things Minoan (an excellent pretext to revisit the work of a writer I loved as a teenager, the wonderful Thomas Burnett Swann).

On this day in 1989 I was reading The Poetry Book Society Anthology 1988 – 1989 or, more likely, had just finished that slim volume and was girding up my loins to dive into the far more substantial The Drawing of The Dark. Tim Powers was one of my big discoveries of the year, along with James P. Blaylock and Allan Massie.

And, on the occasion of my 35th birthday, I appear to have either been reading or just finished The World of Ancient India.

As usual, most of the author details have been completed from memory, so if you see something that looks incorrect please shout.
