Books Read in 1982

Following on from last month’s Books Read in 1981.

Usually the amount of time I spend reading is in inverse proportion to the time I spend socialising, so I guess in 1982, with only 48 books read, I had a very busy social life, though if so I recall very little of it now.

And a lot of these are very long books.

My date keeping also seems to have slipped this year, so I’m not sure if I was reading Herzog or Rocannon’s World on the occasion of my 28th birthday.

It was the year when I discovered Robert Pirsig and D. M. Thomas, with the latter proving a particular favourite in years to come. I read The White Hotel after seeing it lose out in the Booker Prize to the IMO inferior Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie, and was blown away. I’ve felt the same about everything he’s produced since, though I’m more lukewarm regarding pre-Hotel works.

Annoyingly I can’t recall or discover who wrote Threads of Time. Google and Amazon have some credible suggestions, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the Silverberg edited anthology or the trio of novellas by Benford, Simak and Spinrad. I’ll check my book lists more thoroughly when I have time, but in the meanwhile all suggestions are welcome.

Here’s the list (with author names in the main added from memory, so please feel free to point out any errors):-

  1. There is a story by CJ Cherryh entitled ‘Threads of Time’ but I can’t imagine you listing a story on its own.
Maybe it was your way of warning yourself in 2014 about the time spent on new-fangled threads of time… 😐
