Books Read in 1980

Following on from last month’s Books Read in 1979.

And the total for the year has plummeted to a measly 103 titles, which fails by a hair’s breadth to meet a reading rate of two books per week.

The decline continues for the next few years, alas. I recall the early eighties as a time when I had a life, though I can’t actually recall what that life consisted of, other than not reading as many books as before.

Major discoveries for me this year would include Isaac Bashevis Singer, Rita Mae Brown (after I saw Rubyfruit Jungle praised by Tom Robinson), John Rechy (though it wasn’t until City of Night that he really blew me away) and the wonderful John Irving. I also read my first book by a certain Stephen King, but at the risk of speaking heresy I wasn’t all that taken with The Stand (too much sentimentality and religious undertones for my liking) and it would be a while yet before I really got into his oeuvre.

On my 26th birthday I was reading Bruce Sterling’s first novel, Involution Ocean.
