Books Read in 1976

Following on from last month’s Books Read in 1975.

133 titles this year, and it appears to have been the year of the serial, with Edgar Rice Burroughs my most read author, thanks to his Mars and Venus books.

Make what you will of the fact that 1975’s last book was “The Day It Rained Forever” by Ray Bradbury, while 1976 opened with Ballard’s “The Drought”.

From memory, the big discovery of the year was Philip K, Dick, whose work I’d heard a lot about but had never encountered ‘in the flesh’ until 1976.

It appears I also discovered that women write stuff too. Actually, I always knew that, but in 1976 I got round to reading some of their books.

Three of the books listed I can’t find the authors of, not even by searching on Amazon, thanks to their generic titles – “Bronzes”, “Jewellery” and “Ape”, though I think the latter was a ‘gorillas in films’ title, with King Kong as the main man – at least not without turning my house upside down to put my hands on the books and I don’t care that much.

And I have absolutely no memory of reading “The Seal of Dracula” by Barrie Pattison, though everything else on the list rings a bell.

On my 22nd birthday, I was reading “The Plague” by Albert Camus, though I can’t remember if that was because I feeling particularly angsty at the time or was simply trying to impress a woman through cultivating an air of gallic sophistication and intellectuality.

Some fun books there. The books you were reading in 1976 are the same ones I was buying secondhand ten, fifteen years later.
