Back in April I did a list of my favourite books of the year so far, and as it’s now July time for another update.
I read twenty five books in the first quarter of the year, a figure that rose to thirty in the second, but some of those titles were very short and there are quite a few others that I’ve started and haven’t yet finished.
So, in the order I preferred them when I wrote the list ten minutes ago (and, of course, it may be subject to change), here’s my top thirteen books for 2012 so far, with new entries shown in bold:-
A Rope of Thorns – Gemma Files (ChiZine Publications)
The Orphan Palace – Joseph S. Pulver Sr. (Chômu Press)
The Architect – Brendan Connell (PS Publishing)
The Memory of Blood – Christopher Fowler (Transworld)
Off The Rails – Christopher Fowler (Bantam)
Bread and Circuses – Felicity Dowker (Ticonderoga)
Red Gloves – Christopher Fowler (PS Publishing)
Teeth – Edited by Ellen Datlow & Terri Windling (Harper)
Blood and other cravings – Edited by Ellen Datlow (Tor)
A Cold Season – Alison Littlewood (Jo Fletcher Books)
House of Fear – Edited by Jonathan Oliver (Solaris)
Regicide – Nicholas Royle (Solaris)
Where Are We Going – Edited by Allen Ashley (Eibonvale)
It breaks down as six novels, one novella, two collections and four anthologies. PS Publishing and Solaris are the only publishers to appear twice, while looking at things individually there’s been no change from last quarter, with Christopher Fowler listed three times and Ellen Datlow twice.
And nine of these titles were first published in 2011, if not earlier, so it remains a ‘best of Pete’s reading’ list rather than ‘Pete’s best of 2012’.
