You’ll Believe a Man Can Fly

Today, for filler content, something a little different, the trailer for the latest reinvention of Superman, which will hit our screens in 2013 barring apocalypses, Mayan or otherwise:-

Mixed feelings about this.

It look wonderful, even if the opening did remind me slightly of the old Hovis bread advert, but all the same it’s not the Superman I grew up with, which was all about bright colours and clever storytelling, and essentially nothing more than silly fun.

And I thought the last reinvention of the character was seriously naff, so I’m wondering if we really need another one.

As a comic reader I liked the big “S”, but he was never one of my favourite heroes. He was just too powerful, and so the writers had to invent ever more implausible or contrived threats for Superman to deal with, and then there was all the nonsense with the Superman Family and related stuff. Later writers on the series tried to redeem the character and treat more serious themes, but for me the damage had already been done.

My favourite movie featuring the character would have to be the all action Superman II and Christopher Reeves just edges out Dean Cain for the best interpretation of everyone’s favourite Kryptonian.

Any thoughts from the rest of you?

  1. Superman II is my favourite too. My favourite runs on the comic are the daft fifties, the bit from Crisis to his death and return, and Grant Morrison’s All-Star run.

Apparently this new one does feature the big fights that were missing from the last one, which was a huge disappointment after the ending of The Matrix Revolution showed how awesome two guys punching each other through buildings could be. I’ve liked all of Zack Snyder’s films so far, so I reckon I’m going to like this too.

You’re channeling your inner thug ;-)

I’ve liked all of the Zack Snyder films that I’ve seen so far, though with some reservations about the political subtext of “300″, though bearing in mind his recent Occupy meltdown blame for that should probably be laid at the door of Frank Miller.

When I was reading comics, DC were reprising Superman’s adventures of the 50s in things like their eighty page giant range. They had a certain quaint charm about them, but at the time I was getting into Marvel’s ‘realism’ and the contrast didn’t appeal much. I think I might enjoy their innocence a lot more nowadays.

I loved the old Superman films. I particularly liked Superman giving up his powers and getting beaten up, then returning to that diner. I also liked him fighting himself in a scrap yard. I thought Reeves superb (super?) as Clark Kent. I was very disappointed in the latest film, though. I thought the actor was fine, but the story lacked punch.

There’s something quite poignant in having a hero not from Earth being more humane than many of us humans, even if he does wear his pants on the outside of a pair of tights. I’ll look forward to this new offering but won’t get my hopes up just yet.

Curiously I’m now imagining Vic Reeves as Superman. I wonder how that would pan out :-)

And yesterday bought myself the DVD of “Superman II” – quite surprised to realise that I didn’t actually own the movie, given that I enjoyed it so much. I’ll probably think it’s a load of rubbish now.
